Matt Wells appointed Referee Commissioner for NWBL & WNWBL

A past referee, educator and advocate for wheelchair basketball, Matt Wells has been appointed as the referee commissioner for Australia's national wheelchair leagues, the NWBL and WNWBL.

Wells' involvement in the sport of wheelchair basketball has spanned over 20 years including refereeing at three Paralympics.

Most recently, he officiated the gold medal game at the Rio Games in the perfect end to his decorated career on court.

Wells will now work on developing a strategic approach to the training and development of wheelchair basketball referees in Australia and provide a clear pathway for officials to progress all the way through to international status.

This will include establishing ‘conversion’ courses for able-bodied referees that may wish to be involved in wheelchair basketball and consequently developing a ‘needs’ pathway for wheelchair referees in Australia.

"I feel grateful for the opportunity to continue my involvement with the sport I love following my retirement as an active international referee in Rio last year," Wells said.

"I would like to thank my predecessor, Greg Love, for the work that he has done for the sport over many years and for his mentorship throughout my career. "I look forward to sharing my experience with the next generation of officials and will strive to promote wheelchair basketball officiating as a pathway for all basketball officials."

Matt’s appointment was unanimously supported by the Wheelchair Basketball League Executive Committee and Basketball Australia looks forward to him accepting the role to lead, guide and supervise wheelchair referees in Australia.
