CDF (Launch)
What is the Coach Development Framework (CDF)?
The Coach Development Framework is Basketball Australia’s new, modern approach to supporting, recognising and developing coaches at every stage of their journey.
It brings together:
- High-quality learning resources
- Clear qualification pathways
- Recognition for everything coaches do to improve
- Strong alignment with states and territories
The CDF is designed to meet coaches where they are - whether you’re just starting, returning to coaching, or looking to grow further.
Why has Basketball Australia introduced a new framework?
Coaching has evolved and the way we support coaches needed to evolve too.
The new framework:
- Focuses on learning and growth, not just compliance
- Recognises that coaches learn in many different ways
- Provides flexibility, choice and clarity
Most importantly, it puts the coach experience at the centre.
What’s different about this framework compared to the old system?
A few big shifts:
- Qualification over accreditation
The focus is now on what you know, do and apply, not just ticking boxes. - Everything you do counts
Courses, workshops, mentoring, online learning, coaching experiences - they can all be recognised. - Clear vertical and horizontal pathways
Coaches can progress deeper in one area or broaden their knowledge across others. - Ongoing recognition, not start–stop cycles
Your learning builds over time instead of remaining stagnant for a few years.
Do I still need to complete courses?
Yes - but with more choice and flexibility than ever before.
The framework includes:
- Online learning modules
- Practical and face-to-face opportunities
- Mentoring and observation
- Applied learning in real coaching environments
The difference is that learning is now stackable, connected and recognised, rather than isolated.
What is meant by “everything you do can be recognised”?
Under the new framework, many learning activities can contribute to your development record, including:
- Completing Basketball Australia or state-delivered courses
- Attending workshops or webinars
- Being part of a mentoring program
- Reflecting on your coaching practice
- Using tools like Coach Logic
This creates a more accurate picture of you as a coach - not just a list of certificates.
What is Coach Logic and how does it fit in?
Coach Logic is a digital coaching platform that helps you:
- Capture learning and reflections
- Review video and practice footage
- Track your development over time
Within the CDF, Coach Logic helps turn everyday coaching into recognised learning — making development visible, practical and meaningful.
Who created the learning content?
The framework is built using content developed by respected coaches, educators and experts from across Australian basketball and beyond.
This includes contributions from:
- National and state development staff
- Experienced community and high-performance coaches
- Specialist educators and subject-matter experts
The focus is on real-world coaching, not theory for theory’s sake.
How does this work with my state or territory?
The CDF is a national framework delivered in partnership with states and territories.
That means:
- Shared language and structure
- Aligned qualifications and recognition
- Local delivery supported by national resources
Coaches benefit from a consistent experience, while still engaging locally.
I’m already coaching - what does this mean for me?
If you’re already coaching:
- Your existing learning still matters
- You won’t be asked to “start again”
- You’ll have more ways to build, track and showcase your development
The framework is designed to support progression, not create barriers.
Is this only for elite or representative coaches?
No. The framework is built for all coaches, including:
- Beginner and first-time coaches
- Community and club coaches
- School and social competition coaches
- Performance and pathway coaches
Everyone belongs somewhere within the framework.
How will this help me become a better coach?
The CDF helps by:
- Giving you clear learning options
- Encouraging reflection and application
- Connecting learning directly to practice
- Recognising effort, curiosity and improvement
It’s less about “passing” and more about growing over time.
When can I start accessing the new framework?
The first wave of learning resources will be released as part of the launch, with more content added progressively.
This is not a one-off release - it’s the beginning of an evolving coach development ecosystem.
Where do I go for more information or support?
You’ll be able to:
- Explore resources through the Basketball Australia Coaches platform
- Access learning via the LMS
- Speak with your state or territory coaching team
More guidance and resources will continue to roll out alongside the framework.
CDF (General)
Will my qualification be nationally recognised?
Yes. All qualifications delivered within the Coach Development Framework are nationally recognised by Basketball Australia and aligned across all States and Territories. This means your qualification is portable - you can coach anywhere in Australia without needing to requalify when you move clubs or states.
Do I need to be qualified to coach?
Yes. To be formally recognised as a coach and to meet club, association, and insurance/member protection requirements, you need to hold the appropriate qualification for the level you are coaching. The framework makes this clearer and more accessible, with learning that is relevant, flexible, and practical for community coaches.
Do I need to be qualified if I am an assistant coach or just help out from time to time?
If you are regularly involved in coaching - including as an assistant coach - you are encouraged to hold a qualification that matches your role.
For parents or volunteers who help out occasionally, entry-level learning options and short modules are available so you can contribute confidently while building toward a formal qualification if you choose.
What happens if I am inactive for 2 years?
If you are inactive for up to two years, your qualification is not lost. You will lose any CPD points you have accumulated in that time and return to 0. Your base qualification remains valid, and you can return to coaching by simply re-engaging with the framework. You may be encouraged to complete some updated learning to ensure you are aligned with current best practice.
What happens if I am inactive for 4 years?
After four years of inactivity, you will be asked to complete refresher learning before returning to coaching. This isn’t a reset - it’s about supporting you to step back in with confidence, up-to-date knowledge, and recognition for what you already know.
Can coaches apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Yes. Coaches can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if they have relevant experience, previous qualifications, or learning from other sports/careers. There is a national process and criteria for this and the decision of Basketball Australia is final in the matter but applications must be made through your State and Territory contact. The framework values what you already bring to the game and provides pathways to recognise that experience where appropriate.
How can I access my certificate?
Your certificates are available digitally through the Basketball Australia Learning Management System (LMS). Once you complete a qualification, you can download or share your certificate at any time.
What is digital badging?
Digital badges are verifiable, shareable credentials that recognise your learning and coaching achievements. They can be added to your resume, LinkedIn profile, or shared with clubs and associations - making it easier to show what you’ve completed and what you’re qualified to coach. These are available in the new framework for all Silver and Gold Qualifications.
Are the resources mobile-friendly?
Yes. All learning resources within the Coach Development Framework are mobile-friendly, allowing you to learn anytime, anywhere - on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Can I still access the resources if I am not currently coaching?
Absolutely. The framework is designed to support lifelong learning. Even if you are not currently coaching, you can continue to access resources, complete learning, and build recognition so you are ready whenever you return to the court.
Why does each Qualification level (Bronze, Silver, Gold) have an introduction course and do I have to do it ?
Yes you do have to do it and it is just watching a short video explaining the new Coach Development Framework relevant to the resources you are about to have access too. Failure to complete this section will impact the access you have to resources at the level.
Why am I unable to upload my reflection exercises or proof of actively coaching ?
This function is designed to provide you with enough opportunities to maintain your current or gain the next stage of qualification. Once you have completed 1 online module and 1 face to face session, the capability will unlock by following these steps;

- Click on available activities
- Click on Coaching uploads
Where do I find the templates to upload for my reflection exercises?

What is a SAM report from Coach Logic ?
If you again visit the resource library you will be able to see an example of this incredible resource that can be generated from your own practices!
How do I attend face to face development sessions?
As these are scheduled in they will appear in the Training event category and you will be able to attend them. Please note if you are a Bronze coach you will only be able to attend Silver events, a Silver or Gold Coach will be able to attend both Silver and Gold events. Some events may be duplicated so appear twice to allow all levels to attend and accrue points. Ensure you sign up for the one most suitable to you.
