Phil Austen shared some light on his journey at the heart of the Westside Trojans.

On memorable moments

“There have been many memorable experiences and achievements so I must share a few,” said Austen.

“Winning a local Association Senior Men’s Championship and the first ever Statewide League U16 boys Championship as a representative Coach were highlights.”

“Also, establishing a Local Basketball Association in the Western Suburbs of Launceston utilising the Silverdome and providing playing opportunity for up to 200 juniors at a time when the then Basketball Elphin Facility was inadequate to provide court space to service growing interest in the sport.”

“Young ballers whom I coach today are offspring from that same generation that experienced their introduction to the sport through the Silverdome experience,” added Austen.

On motivation

“It comes from the love of the sport (still) and working with likeminded volunteers to grow the game through our great Club,” said Austen

“Giving opportunity for many kids to develop a passion for learning new skills, expanding friendships, competition and in doing so improving / maintaining health and wellbeing outcomes for individuals and families.”

Advice for others

“Do a deep dive but maintain a life balance,” said Austen. “Be open to learning. Maintain a one for all – not all for one approach to your involvement.  TEAM.”
