Your Next Learning Step: Recommended Learning Pathways for Every Coach

Discover the recommended QMS learning modules for each coaching level — from Participation through to High Performance — and find the right starting point for your coaching development journey.

One of the most common questions coaches ask about the new Coach Development Framework is:

"With so many learning opportunities available, where should I start?"

The Basketball Australia Qualification Management System (QMS) contains a growing library of coaching resources covering everything from technical and tactical concepts to leadership, communication, athlete wellbeing, and performance coaching.

While every coach's journey is different, certain learning experiences can have a significant impact depending on the environment you coach in. Whether you're introducing young athletes to basketball for the very first time, guiding representative players through talent pathways, or leading elite performance environments, there are modules specifically designed to support your development.

The following recommendations provide a starting point for coaches at different stages of the coaching pathway.

Participation Coach

Community, domestic, entry-level and athlete experience-focused environments

Participation coaches are often the most important coaches in the game.

For many athletes, they are the first coach they ever have and the person responsible for shaping their initial experience of basketball. A great participation coach can build confidence, create belonging, foster enjoyment, and help athletes develop a lifelong connection with sport.

At this level, coaching is less about systems, tactics, and winning games. Instead, the focus should be on creating safe, inclusive and engaging environments where athletes can learn, develop, and most importantly, enjoy the experience.

To support this, we recommend the following learning modules.

1. Designing Practice for Junior Basketballers

Learn how to create engaging, organised and purposeful training sessions that maximise activity, enjoyment and learning.

This module helps coaches understand how to structure sessions, manage groups effectively, and create learning environments that keep athletes active rather than standing in lines waiting for their turn.

2. Catching, Passing & Dribbling

Develop confidence teaching the core technical fundamentals that underpin early basketball participation and skill development.

Strong fundamentals create the foundation for everything athletes will do later in their basketball journey. This module provides practical strategies for teaching these essential skills in fun and engaging ways.

3. Building Better Movers – Movement Skills

Help young athletes improve balance, coordination, movement efficiency and physical literacy in a basketball context.

Athletes who move well often learn skills more effectively and enjoy sport more. This module focuses on developing movement foundations that support both basketball performance and long-term athletic development.

4. Giving & Receiving Effective Feedback

Strengthen communication skills to better support athlete learning, confidence and motivation.

Learning how to provide clear, constructive and encouraging feedback is one of the most valuable coaching skills. This module explores how coaches can use communication to accelerate learning and build positive relationships with athletes.

5. WLIS – Inclusive Coaching Module

Develop practical strategies to create welcoming, inclusive and athlete-centred environments for all participants.

Every athlete deserves a positive sporting experience. This module provides coaches with practical tools to ensure all participants feel valued, respected and supported.

Suggested Learning Focus

Participation coaches should initially prioritise:

* Athlete enjoyment and retention

* Safe and inclusive environments

* Fundamental skill development

* Effective communication and organisation

* Building confidence as a coach

The emphasis at this level is less about systems and winning, and more about creating environments where athletes want to keep playing, learning and returning each week.

Representative Coach

Association representative, state pathway and talent development environments

Representative coaching introduces a new level of complexity.

Athletes are often more committed, training volumes increase, competition becomes more demanding, and coaches must balance individual development with team performance. Success at this level requires coaches to think beyond individual drills and begin connecting training directly to game performance.

The following modules are recommended for coaches operating within representative and pathway environments.

1. Representative Learning Design

Learn how to design practices that connect directly to game performance, decision-making and athlete development outcomes.

This module explores how coaches can build training environments that mirror the demands of competition and accelerate athlete growth.

2. Scanning, Reading & Decision-Making

Develop smarter athletes by improving perception, awareness and in-game decision-making concepts.

Basketball is ultimately a game of decisions. This module helps coaches understand how to develop athletes who can recognise cues, process information and make effective decisions under pressure.

3. Defensive Schemes

Build a deeper understanding of team defensive systems, adjustments and tactical problem-solving.

As competition levels increase, coaches require a stronger understanding of team concepts and tactical flexibility. This module explores defensive structures and how coaches can adapt them to suit their athletes and environment.

4. Coaching Across a Season

Explore strategies for planning, managing workload, maintaining motivation and supporting athlete progression across longer campaigns.

Representative coaching is about more than individual training sessions. This module focuses on long-term planning and helping athletes perform consistently throughout an entire season.

5. Mental Health in Sport

Better understand athlete wellbeing, performance pressures and the role coaches play in creating psychologically safe environments.

Athlete wellbeing is a critical component of performance and development. This module helps coaches better understand the challenges athletes may face and how to provide appropriate support.

Suggested Learning Focus

Representative coaches should focus on:

* Connecting practice to performance

* Tactical understanding and adaptability

* Athlete development over results alone

* Managing seasons and tournaments effectively

* Developing reflective coaching habits

At this level, coaches begin balancing athlete development with performance outcomes and should continually refine both their technical knowledge and interpersonal coaching skills.

High Performance Coach

National pathway, professional and elite performance environments

High performance coaching extends well beyond X's and O's.

Elite coaches operate in complex environments where leadership, communication, decision-making, culture and collaboration all play critical roles in achieving success. Coaches at this level must influence not only athletes, but entire performance systems.

The following learning modules are recommended for coaches working within high performance environments.

1. Developing a High Performance Coaching MindsetExplore the standards, behaviours and thinking patterns that underpin successful elite coaching environments.

This module examines the mindset and leadership approaches commonly demonstrated by successful high performance coaches.

2. Decision Making Under Fatigue and Pressure

Improve your ability to remain calm, clear and effective when making decisions in demanding, high-pressure moments.

From close games to tournament play and championship environments, high performance coaches must consistently make quality decisions when pressure is at its highest.

3. Reading the Game

Develop advanced pattern recognition, anticipation and tactical intervention skills to influence performance in real time.

This module focuses on helping coaches recognise emerging trends within games and make timely interventions that positively impact performance.

4. Integrating Performance Support Staff

Learn how to align coaches, medical staff, performance specialists and analysts to build cohesive performance environments.

Elite sport is increasingly collaborative. This module explores how coaches can effectively lead multidisciplinary teams and maximise the expertise available around them.

5. Presentation Skills and Media Performance

Strengthen communication skills for team environments, stakeholder engagement and media-facing situations.

High performance coaches regularly communicate with athletes, staff, administrators, sponsors and media. This module helps coaches communicate with clarity, confidence and purpose.

Suggested Learning Focus

High performance coaches should prioritise:

* Leading complex performance environments

* Tactical adaptability and game management

* Decision-making under pressure

* Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams

* Communication, leadership and self-awareness

At this level, the coach's influence extends far beyond technical coaching. They help shape culture, standards, relationships and performance systems across the entire environment.
