Ability Hoops is Basketball Australia’s inclusive participation program designed to provide children (8-12 year olds) with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder the opportunity to learn and enjoy basketball in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.
The program is built on the principle that everyone should have access to sport, regardless of ability. Ability Hoops introduces participants to the fundamental skills of basketball such as dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork. Through fun, modified activities tailored to individual needs. Sessions are delivered in small groups, supported by trained coaches and volunteers who create an encouraging environment where players can progress at their own pace.
Ability Hoops aligns with Basketball Australia’s broader participation vision of ‘Everybody Belongs’ which is a key feature of the program. Each session is designed not only to build basketball skills, but also to promote social interaction, confidence, communication and physical activity.
